Background of the Study

Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services over the internet, including storage, processing, and networking. This technology allows businesses to scale their operations more efficiently by providing on-demand access to resources and services (Oni & Nwankwo, 2024). Cloud computing is particularly beneficial for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which may lack the resources for traditional IT infrastructure but still require robust solutions to manage growth.

In Sokoto State, SMEs are increasingly adopting cloud computing to streamline operations, improve collaboration, and enhance business scalability. However, the extent to which cloud computing contributes to scalability is still not well understood. This study investigates the role of cloud computing in supporting business scalability in SMEs in Sokoto State, particularly in terms of cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and operational efficiency.

Statement of the Problem

Although cloud computing has shown promise in enhancing business scalability, many SMEs in Sokoto State face challenges in fully leveraging the technology. Issues such as internet connectivity, data security concerns, and a lack of technical expertise hinder the successful implementation of cloud-based solutions. This study aims to explore how cloud computing can enhance business scalability for SMEs in Sokoto State, while also identifying the barriers to its effective use.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate how cloud computing enhances business scalability for SMEs in Sokoto State.
  2. To identify the challenges SMEs face in adopting and utilizing cloud computing for scalability.
  3. To recommend strategies to improve cloud computing adoption and its role in business scalability.

Research Questions

  1. How does cloud computing contribute to enhancing business scalability for SMEs in Sokoto State?
  2. What challenges hinder SMEs from fully utilizing cloud computing for scalability?
  3. What strategies can improve the adoption and effectiveness of cloud computing in SMEs for better scalability?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Cloud computing does not significantly enhance business scalability for SMEs in Sokoto State.
  2. Challenges in adopting cloud computing do not significantly hinder business scalability for SMEs.
  3. Strategies for improving cloud computing adoption do not significantly enhance business scalability for SMEs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on SMEs in Sokoto State that have adopted cloud computing between 2023 and 2025. Limitations include the heterogeneity of SMEs, which may have varying levels of technical expertise and infrastructure, and limited access to proprietary data.

Definitions of Terms
